If you have accepted a place at the University of Leeds or you are hoping to study there here in the near future, you might like to learn a little more about its history before arriving on campus. In this brief guide, we’re going to take a whistle-stop tour of the most important events in the university’s history, starting with its origins.
The University of Leeds was granted its royal charter by King Edward VII, in 1904. Up until 1992, this was the way in which all British universities were created, so we can consider 1904 as the official date that the University of Leeds came into existence. However, its origins stretch back a little further into the past than this.
Prior to the presentation of the royal charter and change of name to the University of Leeds, this educational institution was known under two other names. Firstly, in 1874, it opened as the Yorkshire College of Science. 10 years later, after a merger with the Leeds School of Medicine, which was established in 1831, it became known simply as Yorkshire College. It subsequently joined Owens College and University College Liverpool in 1887, as one part of the federal Victoria University. And then, as we already know, it finally became the University of Leeds in 1904.
One of the best ways to get in the right frame of mind for studying at a university is to learn about some of the notable people who studied there previously. In the case of the University of Leeds, you can use Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits, the composer Estelle White and Nobel Prize winner George Porter for inspiration. For those looking for a career in film, the University of Leeds was also home to famous actor Chris Pine and also Emma Mackey, most recently known for her part as Maeve in popular series Sex Education.
