No 1 Whitehall Riverside, one of the landmark offices of Leeds, is now undergoing a £1m modernisation programme. Contractors Morris & Spottiswood will comprehensibly refurbish the building’s two 17,159 sq ft vacant office floors, bringing the premises back to a “striking Grade A standard”.

When works are completed in December, landlord NFU Mutual says that they will have the largest floor plates and amount of vacant Grade A space currently available in any building in Leeds city centre.

But that’s not all that’s happening in the west end. In addition to their work on the Merrion Centre, Town Centre Securities have won detailed consent to build a 128-room hotel with GMI construction, taking advantage of the increased demand for hotel beds brought by Leeds Arena. It is estimated that the award-winning arena will draw an extra 70,000 overnight stays in the city each year.

Meanwhile, property investor and developer MEPC is developing the nearby Wellington Place scheme, with plans to begin another building in the new year.

It all adds up to an exciting future for the west end of Leeds!
